Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the process of evaluating the possible environmental implications of a proposed project or development, considering both positive and negative inter-related socioeconomic, cultural, and human-health impacts. EIA is defined by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as a tool used to identify the environmental, social, and economic implications of a project prior to deciding. It seeks to predict environmental impacts early in project planning and design, to discover ways and means to limit negative impacts, to adapt projects to fit the local environment, and to give predictions and options to decision-makers. EIA can provide both environmental and economic benefits, such as reduced project implementation and design costs, and reduced impact of laws and regulations.
